How to Prepare for a Couples Photoshoot

Booking a photoshoot is the easy part! Getting comfortable in front of the camera- not so much. Let’s chat about a few ways that can help prepare you to have a fun effortless photoshoot with your partner!

  1. Choose a photographer based on their portfolio.

This is for the lovers! You want your love to be captured in photos! It really begins with picking the right photographer. While many photographs are beautiful, you need to pick a photographer that can really bring out the best in both of you. Take a look at the photos they’ve taken. Ask yourself if the photos feel effortless! A good couples photographer will create a comfortable environment and give prompts that can cultivate sweet interactions.

2. Take time before the photoshoot to connect with each other.

Let’s face it. It’s not always butterflies and rainbows in a relationship. Some days it really takes an effort to feel loving. Spending quality time together can really help you see each other.

A few tangible ideas:

  1. Get dinner together with plenty of time to get to the photoshoot (less stress if you’re not pressed for time).

  2. Pack a picnic and show up to the location early to snack and enjoy each other’s company.

  3. Spend the day together doing something leisure that you both enjoy. Important not to be too exhausted or hungry by the time your photoshoot comes around.

3. Focus on each other.

Your couples photoshoot is not about your interaction with the photographer. Your couples photoshoot is all about how you interact with each other! The photographer will of course prompt and give you direction. However, the love between you is really what shows through the prompts.

A few things to remember during your shoot:

  1. Keep a hand on each other unless otherwise instructed. Pull each other in for face kisses, hold hands, hands around the waist, etc.

  2. Keep your eyes on each other. There are parts of your photoshoot that your photographer will instruct you otherwise, but in most cases, look at each other.

  3. Remember that you are not expected to be a professional model! As a photographer, what I really want is authenticity. You love each other, you are capturing this season of your life. Be yourselves, dance, hold hands, nuzzle noses! Get close!!
