How to Have a Fun Photoshoot with your Small Children
The most important thing you can do to have and incredible shoot is to be flexible and keep every detail as simple as possible.
In my experience this is what makes for a fantastic shoot. A photoshoot full of smiles, and lasting memories. Your family is in this stage of life, constant change and constant accommodation. Let’s break down what this really means.
Prepare outfits that are simple and conducive to light play.
If your babies are in tight or uncomfortable clothes/shoes, they might be grouchy. Have your child or children in comfortable climate appropriate clothing. The best photos I have captured are during candid family play. In order to create this environment, we need to start with comfortability.
Bring all the snacks your children love!
Cover all your basis. Make sure no one is hungry, cold, hot, or tired! If your child has missed their nap, it is not the end of the world, make sure you have snacks. Food is in fact the way to the heart.
Send some inspiration pictures to your photographer ahead of time (and trust them to execute).
If you have very specific ideas of what you want, do not be afraid to send some ideas to your photographer. While we are professionals, we are not mind readers. If you have a specific photo you would like, send it! Your photographer should have an idea of how to achieve that look! This being said, you cannot expect your photographer to change their editing style for you. A large part of our business is consistency. Make sure when picking your photographer, you like the tones they use.
Be willing to let go of a few details.
(This is more specific to my photography style).
When it comes down to it, the most important aspect of capturing great photos, are great attitudes. While that bow might be SO adorable, capture a picture with it and then ditch it if it becomes a problem. Be prepared to explore with your children during our photoshoot. We will have some posed photos, but the majority of moments will be children led. Its more about your interactions with each other! Get down to their level, show them things, and connect with them. These moments are more important than the perfect outfits and accessories.
